How excited are you for this?
I found this article on screen rant.com that goes into the new song for the movie, “The Girl in the Bubble”
https://screenrant.com/wicked-2-for-good-movie-soundtrack-glinda-new-song-defying-gravity-comparison
Please take a couple minutes to read. The article goes on to say that (warning: possible spoilers ahead)
“However, it’s also crucial that “Girl In The Bubble” doesn’t completely absolve Glinda of all responsibility for the decision that she made in “Defying Gravity.” Ultimately, Glinda’s vanity is still her fatal flaw. The fact that she tried to protect her friend (in secret) doesn’t change the fact that she was complicit in the Wizard’s propaganda machine.
The friendship between Elphaba and Glinda is flawed and complex, and that’s exactly what makes Wicked so compelling. Neither of them is perfect, but they bring out the good in each other. They change each other “for good” as the titular song proves. Glinda being fallible and making mistakes is a key component of this dynamic.”
I thought it was interesting in the article when it states that “Glinda was complicit in the Wizard’s propaganda machine”. With everything going on in the world today, this line made me do a full stop. Are we all Glindas in some way? Are we Elphaba’s fighting for the animals rights? Who are we as people? It’s an important question to think about and part of what this broadway show/movie is.
Let’s go back to the beginning of “No One Mourns the Wicked” when it says “Are we born wicked or is wickedness thrust upon us?” We all start out the same way. Throughout this whole movie, it’s clear who are the bad people, but are the good people really good? Do they carry some wickedness in them as well but do not show it? Just some thoughts to ponder.
Love,
Jen Defies Gravity
